Description
A Collective biography of the Quander Family told through stories from its nearly 300 year documented history in the U.S. The Quander family has significant history in Maryland, Pennsylvania, DC and Virginia. All branches are discussed in the book. There are strong ties to the Mount Vernon estate through Nancy Carter (Quander), who was enslaved on the property and freed
through George Washington’s will. Nancy married Charles Quander in 1810 and they stayed in the Mount Vernon area. Charles Henry Quander was enslaved at Dennis Johnston’s Hayfield plantation and was freed by the Emancipation Proclamation. He later bought 88 acres of the Spring Bank plantation and became a successful dairy farmer.
