Oak Grove School

Title

Oak Grove School

Date

Mid 1880s

Description

The original two-room Oak Grove School for Black children was built sometime during the 1880s in Herndon, near the Loudoun County line. It served children from the Oak Grove and Cooktown communities. The schoolhouse was replaced in 1930 with some Julius Rosenwald funding for a two-room schoolhouse. Students from both counties attended this school and, in 1948, the Willard Colored School in Loudoun County, built ca. 1890, consolidated with the Oak Grove School. The Oak Grove School building closed in 1952, and a new six-room brick Oak Grove Elementary School was built near the county line at the corner of Rock Hill and Sterling Roads. Again, the school served students from both counties. Oak Grove Elementary School closed in 1964 and the Fairfax County students went to the desegregated Herndon Elementary School which was built in 1961.
