<text>Many of the gravestones were handmade. According to descendants, the monument for Charles and Sarah was ordered from Sears and Roebuck. A member of the Pearson family brought it back from the Clifton Railroad Station by wagon.

The Pearson family owned the property near the cemetery until 1951, when the Federal Government condemned the land to build a new airport in Burke. The Burke Community fought the airport and won. Former owners were offered their land back, but the Pearsons could not afford to buy the property.

This cemetery received much attention in 1994 when home construction developed around it. The builders cleaned up debris and fenced in the cemetery. A path was created from the road to the woods where the cemetery is located.

The Pearson family’s history can be traced back prior to the Civil War. When Francis Coffer died on March 30,1861, his will freed from slavery Charles T. Pearson, his three brothers, and mother. The proceeds from the sale of Coffer’s property went to the Pearson family also. Charles Pearson built a home, farmed, and later set aside a plot of land for the cemetery.

According to a family member, the last of 15 people to be buried at the cemetery was Frank Coffer Pearson, age 88. His father was Charles T. Pearson. In an Evening Star obituary of May 19, 1956, Frank Coffer Pearson was “one of the town’s best-known citizens.”</text>

The site was probed in Oct. 1991 and 15 burials were located. There is one inscribed marble headstone and four marble base pieces of varying sizes present. The transfer of Strawberry Vale from JOHN C. SCOTT to THEODORIC LEE on Oct. 29, 1811 (Deed Book L2:318) exempted a ¼-acre burial ground. Diane Rafuse wrote in her book "Maple- wood" (1970) that there was an unmarked graveyard "midway between the house and Route 123" that was thought to be a Gantt Family Cemetery. The Gantts owned the property from 1814 to c. 1848 but it is unclear whether or not they are buried on the property. In 1967 Westgate Corporation petitioned the Fairfax County Circuit Court to remove the bodies from this cemetery. Permission was granted and in October 1967 Everly Funeral Home moved the remains to Fairfax City Cemetery (FX082), Sec. 2, Lot352A, Site 1.</text>

                <text>Archaeological Investigation Report:
In 2004, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) announced the widening of Guinea Road and Little River Turnpike. Neighbors volunteered there was a cemetery located at the intersection. VDOT ‘s announcement resulted in county resident Dennis Howard stating he had ancestors buried there. VDOT engaged the Louis Berger Group to archaeologically survey the cemetery, for which they obtained a Burial Permit from the Virginia Department of Historic Resources. Through excavation, thirty-three burials were found: 15 children, 11 females, 6 males and 1 unidentified adult. Artifacts discovered included coffin wood and hardware, buttons, snaps, and clasps. No intact coffins remained but the hexagonal shape of the coffins was found in several locations during the excavation.

The Louis Berger Group report stated that all human remains exhibited African American traits. The majority suffered from dental disease and evidence of heavy, physical labor. The study dated the burials as occurring between the 1840s and 1870s. One inscribed gravestone (S. A. Williams 1851) and many uninscribed fieldstones were located.

The remains and artifacts were removed and reburied at the Pleasant Valley Memorial Park Cemetery at 8420 Little River Turnpike.

Two historical markers were installed by the County History Commission. at the location of the original cemetery and where the remains were reburied.

Notes:
A study of the Guinea Road cemetery that was completed in 1991 found burials with inscribed gravestones.

A survey of this site conducted in June 1991 by Dr. Douglas Owsley of the Smithsonian Institution revealed the presence of six burials, each with fieldstone markers: Tommie Gibson, Lewis Gibson Birth April 15, 1872, Henry Gibson Birth January 7, 1871, Anna Melinda Parker Death April 23, 1891, Sara Eva Parker Death January 9, 1887, and Maude Estelle Parker Death February 11, 1889.
</text>

                <text>This is a historically African American Cemetery. The land for this cemetery was purchased by the Churches and Fraternities Association of Alexandria on Oct. 27, 1944. It appears that many of the older graves were relocated from an Odd Fellows Cemetery established by the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows, Stevens Lodge No. 1435 that stood on nearly two acres near the intersection of Washington Boulevard and Columbia Pike in Arlington. Selena and Thornton Gray of Arlington House have a relatively new tombstone here. Other families may have been moved here as well. The majority of tombstones are dated after 1960. A 2015 Washington Post article indicated that there were unclaimed remains from Washington DC that have been relocated here as well but may be unmarked.

The oldest gravestone is marked 1892, but it is likely moved from another location. The cemetery includes formal markers, field stones, concrete and wooden markers, and funeral home markers.</text>

According to an article in the 26 May 1988 Vienna Times by Carol Bonham, this cemetery is on land once owned by Capt. Harmon L. Salsbury where he built his home “Windover Heights.” In 1884, Salsbury, who had commanded a division of African American soldiers during the Civil War, conveyed land to Blacks for use as a cemetery. The cemetery has been known over the years as the Borgus, the North-South, the Lewis Street, and the Windover Cemetery. It was named West End Cemetery in 1986 when restoration was being planned by Historic Vienna, Inc. After the restoration, over 250 people at- tended a dedication ceremony at the cemetery on 26 April 1987.

When the gravestones were read in April 1988, the cemetery was in excellent condition and was being maintained by Historic Vienna, Inc. The cemetery contained 27 gravestones. The earliest death date was 1884; the most recent was 1978.</text>
